Combat sport laws in Ontario are set to be overhauled in what the government says is an effort to draw more high profile events to the province and bolster athlete safety. Michael Tibollo, minister of tourism, culture and sport, said the government plans to replace legislation that governs sports like boxing, mixed martial arts and kickboxing to allow for the development of regulations that are in line with evolving international standards. The current legislation is outdated, has deterred major combat sport promoters from holding more events in Ontario, and means the international sports are fought under different rules in the province, Tibollo said.

Having trained with 3 former world champions and competing, LeVar made the difficult but inevitable decision to give up being the athlete and support his sons as a coach in the very club that he began boxing. As a coach LeVar has participated at Provincial competitions as well as junior and senior National competitions.
The main differences are in the Rules as well as in the Objectives of the two sports, with different safety standards and records. Because of this distinction, unlike in other sports, athletes as well as referees and judges of professional boxing are not permitted to participate in amateur and Olympic boxing events. Boxing Ontario has consulted with Boxing Canada and it has been agreed upon that until a formal announcement from AIBA is made the currently used weight categories will remain in effect for all sanctioned tournaments and events. The Golden Gloves tournament is just over a week away so the presently used weight classes will stand for this event.
