Fom adding depth and beauty, glazing has its practical side. Glazed finishes can stand up to a fierce scrubbing and can mask drywall problems and inconsistencies. Despite all the hype faux finishes have received in the last few years, this type of painting has been around for centuries allowing painters to create beautiful finishes that emulate fine woods and marble.
A glaze is a liquid medium that can be mixed with regular wall paint or acrylic paint. Because glaze slows down the drying time of paint, it allows time to manipulate it with various faux finishing techniques, using a sponge, rag or other faux painting tools. Water can compromise the durability of the paint if you add too much.

My decorating partner, Matt Fox, and I are big fans of faux painting techniques. We've found that they energize a room with color and texture and can change the look of a room from drab to dynamic. We particularly like the look of color washing, a paint technique that can be used in any style of room. To achieve this look, a thin glaze or water-based wash is applied over the base coat of paint to create an effect of subtle layers of color.
Use on properly prepared and previously painted or faux finished metal, wood, wallpaper and plastic laminate surfaces such as cabinets, furniture, walls, decorative projects and childrens toys. Computer screens and printers vary in how colors are displayed. Colors which display on the screen and printed colors may not match the paint's actual color.
Faux painting glaze, also called extender, is a translucent liquid that mixes with paint and coloring tints to create a see-through decorative finish for walls and furniture. Because glaze dries slower than paint, it allows time to manipulate the finish with a sponge or other faux finishing tool to create these effects. Glaze painting is sometimes called broken color painting because the decorative designs are applied over a solid base color and the top coating is patchy, allowing the underlying colors to show through.
Latex glaze provides a plethora of options when it comes to faux finishing and creative painting techniques. Glaze and paint mix together to create a workable medium tailored to your project. The glaze provides a bit of translucency to add visual depth to your project and also extends the drying time of the paint, allowing you more time to work your creative magic on the project at hand.
